Why Smallville’s Supergirl costume is the best version for the DCEU
If the DCEU’s Supergirl takes inspiration from previous versions of Kara Zor-El’s costume, it should come from the design of Smallville season 11.
Supergirl joins the DCEU and when it comes to tailoring the costume, Smallville is a great source of inspiration for her cinematic look. One of the big upcoming DC movies is Flash it will be a huge chapter for the DCEU. Not only does Barry Allen finally get his long-awaited feature film, but he will explore time travel and the multiverse for the DCEU. While the film is a slight adaptation of DC’s infamous Flashpoint storyline, it will be unique to the DCEU. Not only will Ezra Miller’s Scarlet Speedster take center stage, but he will be joined by several different DC characters old and new.

Flash will feature not one, but two different versions of Batman as Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton resume their respective iterations. However, a new iconic character is leaping from the page to the screen. Director Andy Muschietti has revealed that Sasha Calle has been officially cast as Supergirl in the DCEU, but details about her character have yet to be revealed. Since the film is now in production, it is hoped that details will start to emerge soon.
But as Warner Bros. brings Supergirl to the big screen for the second time since 1984 with the Helen Slater film, they’ll also bring her costume to life. Despite Muschietti, in breaking the news to Calle, brandished a Steel man-suit to demonstrate that she would play one of the iconic members of House of El, she’ll likely get her own look. The DCEU still manages to make its own take on the iconic outfits while taking a bit of inspiration from the source material. Much like most comic book superheroes, Supergirl has had a variety of costumes throughout its history. But if costumers were considering specific iterations, Smallville actually has a perfect design that’s ready for a live action start.
While Laura Vandervoort’s version of Kara Zor-El never had a proper costume Smallville was being aired, the season 11 comic gave the heroine her Supergirl costume. In the chapter “Argo”, it is revealed that Kara is now living in the 31st century as a member of the Legion of Superheroes. Since Kara began to function fully as a Supergirl, she has started wearing a new uniform which has become a look unique to Clark’s Superman costume. Rather than the traditional cape and skirt, her costume comes with a long cape that has a cape shape while maintaining a sense of futuristic design. Although it may not have been the intention, the Smallville the season 11 design looks like something that would match the formal Kryptonian outfit of the DCEU which Steel man established.
In many ways, that would give Kara a new feel for live action, just like Super girl Season 5 took place when Melissa Benoist’s Girl of Steel got a new costume. While Smallville’s Kara will likely never be seen live again, the DCEU is expected to adapt her Season 11 uniform. Even though Henry Cavill’s Superman does not appear in Flash, it would be visually appealing to see him and Calle’s Supergirl have their own distinct looks when / if they share the screen together. It would be different looks, but still they would come from the same base that fans might have seen on Krypton in Steel man. With a bit of luck, Supergirl’s The DCEU costume will be revealed ASAP and ideally it will have a unique look like Smallville’s the version did.
