Devon stars in a big new celebrity travel TV series that airs this week.
Susan Calman is back on Channel 5 with a new series of her popular travel show Susan Calman’s Big Dayand for the first episode, she explores Devon.
Inspired by her childhood family vacations, Suan fires up her vintage motorhome – named after one of her heroines, Helen Mirren – and hits the road for an all-new series. She’s ready to experience as much of Britain’s joy and beauty as she can cram in, on a fun ride around these shores. Just as Helen welcomes every new hill with a tremor, both are welcome wherever they go.
The first of the new series of Susan Calman’s Great Outings finds her in Devon, exploring the English Riviera. Susan will discover intriguing places and inspiring sights during her sunny 85-mile adventure of sparkling seas, pristine beaches and pretty harbours.
She discovers the magnificent Babbacombe Cliff Railway which has been operating since 1926 to cross would-be tourists up the steep slope to the beautiful beach below. It is not without some trepidation that Susan gets into her car, but the scenic reward is soon clear to her.
Along the coast is Torquay with its long reputation for friendliness and elegance. Susan wants to know why and meets a local who tells her all about the walk and the secrets of a once-essential fashion accessory: the parasol! Armed with all the right moves, Susan tries to walk along Princess Pier, with a surprising result!
Susan can’t resist a detour – and doesn’t want to pass so close to famous Dartmoor without seeing it for herself. She heads to the spectacular Hound Tor- where she is invited to try a unique hobby that combines treasure hunting with hiking.
The letterbox was designed on Dartmoor in the mid-19th century to allow walkers to leave messages to each other. It has since become an extremely popular local pastime. Trusting local letterboxing enthusiast Pat, and equipped with clues and a compass, Susan braves poisonous snakes and doggedly follows instructions to make her first discovery.
Back on the Riviera, the sea beckons – and Susan joins a scallop diving expedition. Here, not only does she get her hands on a tasty local delicacy, but she gets closer than she’s ever been to some other Riviera visitors – a pod of dolphins. She finds the whole region inspirational – and is living out her own ‘Orient Express’ fantasy on Dartmouth’s beautiful steam railway, near where the great author Agatha Christie lived.
With the sun shining, it’s no surprise everyone seems drawn to the water, so she heads out to sea again – this time to the Royal Dart Yacht Club. Here she is invited to join “Ladies Afloat” – a group started over 20 years ago to encourage more women to sail.
But she’s not here just to admire the view – today is race day and Susan has been enlisted to help and has the honor of starting the race with a honk! Now she has to focus and make sure the horn isn’t too long or too short…it’s harder than she thought.
Susan finds herself in one of South Devon’s prettiest towns – Salcombe. The beautiful harbor and charming streets have made this friendly place a tourist magnet, but Susan’s destination is just minutes from the stunning Kingsbridge Estuary.
There is no pier at the spectacular South Sands beach, so they use a Sea Tractor for the final leg of the trip. Said to be only one of two such vehicles nationwide. Susan is invited to take turns driving her. She’s not sure it’s the best idea with a crowded beach – but nonetheless, she manages to maneuver it in a straight line. However, when it comes to parking, she’ll leave that to the expert!
