UK Sitcom: 60 Years of Laughing at Ourselves, 9:30 p.m. BBC Four

After a triple treatment of episodes of The good life, One foot in the grave and The Royle family, this documentary nicely complements the sitcom Tuesday on BBC Four.

It’s a journey through the history of the British TV sitcom, from Hancock’s half-hour in the 1950s to shows today.

It also reveals the inspiration behind some of the most enduring characters and how comedy has reflected changing attitudes in society.

Narrated by Rebecca Front (above), it features contributions from writers and actors such as Steve Coogan, Richard Curtis, James Corden, Graham Linehan, Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.

It’s sticky fingers all around like Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas present as bakers put their twists on a classic caramel pie.

Next, they have to produce a family favorite cookie bar in the technique, before creating a mind-blowing dessert enclosed in a sugar dome.

Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith judge their efforts, deciding who wins the star baker and who gets home.

In the first episode, a tornado locks the school out and Helen thinks it’s coming especially for her.

The kids pass the time by writing fanfiction, “dispatching” various combinations of faculty members, while Mary, Stef and Michelle hatch a plan to escape school.

Next, Jack asks the students to form a fake cult to sabotage Principal Durbin’s new school uniforms, and Mary, Stef and Michelle prepare to see one of their favorite artists who is in town to perform.
