The meeting of friends is already a disaster – who invited these guests?
HBO Maxof Friends meeting was one of his biggest announcements when the streaming service was first announced. And now we’re finally going to get it, May 27 – and I’m already sure I’ll hate it watching it.
I loved Friends when it was the mainstay of NBC’s Must See TV line. I was that guy who (wrongly) claimed it was better than Seinfeld. I actually worried about the intermittent relationship between Ross and Rachel. I was stunned when Chandler and Monica finally pulled it off. I even did this thing where Ross and Monica were hitting two fists against each other, their own version of giving the middle finger. I think Joey’s dissection of Rachel’s trifle is perfect.
But then I really learned about it. And I practically did the slap in the face to my monitor.
Friends meeting has too many friends of friends
Through Hollywood journalist, The Friends Reunion will feature the following cast (in alphabetical order):
- David Beckham
- Justin bieber
- James corden
- Cindy crawford
- Cara Delevingne
- Lady Gaga
- Elliott Gould
- Kit Harington
- Larry Hankin
- Mindy Kaling
- Thomas lennon
- Christina pickles
- Tom selleck
- James michael tyler
- Maggie Wheeler
- Reese witherspoon
- Malala Yousafzai
And before we get to the obvious names that don’t belong, let’s look at who belongs here. Shockingly, Cindy Crawford does – she was on Chandler’s list of five celebrities on his “gift” list.
Elliott Gould and Christina Pickles, of course, played Jack and Judy Geller, parents of Monica and Ross. Larry Hankin was a neighbor of Monica and Rachel, who lived downstairs and was bowled over by all the noise. Thomas Lennon (from Reno 911!) Is an even deeper cut: he played Joey’s “identical hand twin” in the season five finale.
Tom Selleck played Dr Richard Burke, who was dating Monica – and didn’t want to have children with her. James Michael Tyler was Gunther, Rachel’s boss at the Central Perk Cafe. You might know Maggie Wheeler’s laughter better than her name, as she played Janice, Chandler’s intermittent love interest. And, finally, Reese Witherspoon was Rachel’s sister, Jill Greene.
What’s wrong with meeting friends
Reunion specials are rarely fantastic entertainment, such as the West Wing reunion where the cast pieced together an episode, so we already have to lower our standards. What we know about the Friends episode is simple: All six main stars will reprise their roles for part of this new “special” episode – but the rest of the project will consist of the actors themselves. It just seems … light on content, but let’s get to the big deal.
Friends Reunion’s guest list is littered with names that don’t make sense – starting with people too young to be relevant to this reunion. Justin Bieber (born March 1, 1994) was only ten years old when the show ceased airing on May 6, 2004. How did he any connection to the series? Anyone who has watched the show excessively has such a close bond as him. The oldest of the mega-popular K-Pop group BTS (Kim Seokjin, born December 4, 1992) was said to have been 11 when the lights went out at Central Perk. Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai (born July 12, 1997) may be a prestigious name, but she is even younger and would have been 6 by the time the show ended.
I understand these are all big stars and could help the special catch younger eyes, but wasn’t that long-awaited reunion big enough? More confusing are the people who don’t seem to have any real reason other than being famous. James Corden, for example, is just one of the many celebrities who is best known for his ubiquity. I’m not against the man who makes the money, but his mere presence is a sign that any random celebrity is welcome.
Lady Gaga and Mindy Kaling are great and fun, but – again – no, nothing to do with the show, belongs. We also don’t know why David Beckham is on this list, outside of that time frame he was pictured wearing a Friends shirt.
Reunion of Friends misses real stars like Mike Hannigan
Doesn’t Mike Hannigan’s name ring a bell? If that’s the case, you owe Paul Rudd an apology, as his work as Hannigan, Phoebe Buffay’s third husband, helped make Friends’ final seasons watchable.
The big list of huge guest stars absent from Reunion Island is its own story, but let’s just remember that Julia Roberts, Jean Claude Van Damme, Isabella Rosellini, Christina Applegate, Billy Crystal, Helen Hunt and Winona Ryder could all have been invited. Heck, comedy icon Danny DeVito should be here, because he should be all over.
Of course, I know we’re not going to get Brad Pitt to reprise the role of Will Colbert – there’s too much history with him and Jennifer Aniston. Likewise, Aisha Tyler is unlikely to return due to his problems with the co-creator of the show Marta Kauffman from Friends melanin deficiency. Oh, and the list goes on. Why can’t we have George Clooney, who also starred on the show? Giovanni Ribisi, Morgan Fairchild and Kathleen Turner are also some of the names we want to be on this list.
Maybe these big names will be the big surprises HBO Max doesn’t want to spoil. Anyway, meeting of friends? We’re on a break, efficient now.
