The main road to North Cheyenne Canon will be closed from September 20 to May 2022; trails, Helen Hunt Falls will remain open
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A major road closure at one of Colorado Springs’ most popular parks is coming this week and could impact access to some of the trails in the coming months.
Cheyenne Canyon Road, the main thoroughfare through North Cheyenne Canon Park, will be closed from the main entrance to the Helen Hunt Falls parking lot from Monday through May of next year. The closure will be in place so that construction crews can replace three aging vehicular bridges.
âThe identified bridges (labeled B, C and D on this project map) are being rebuilt to ensure public safety and allow the community to continue using the road and access to emergency services. By proactively replacing these structures before they completely fail, costs can be managed, works can be planned efficiently, and impacts on natural resources and park users can be minimized, âthe city said. of Colorado Springs in a press release.
The park’s more than 25 miles of trails, popular with many hikers, bikers, and runners, will remain open during construction, although some, like the Mount Cutler and Mount Muscoco trails, may require a bit of additional hiking. The only way for cars to enter the park over the next few months will be Gold Camp Road. Drivers can also park in the parking lots outside the main entrance and go hiking or biking there. Cars entering the park from Gold Camp Road can continue to Helen Hunt Falls, but will not be able to go further.
âWe would like to thank the park users for their patience during this project,â said Aaron Egbert, Project Manager and Senior Engineer for the City of Colorado Springs. âWe understand how important this park is to the community and we are committed to replacing these bridges in the safest and most efficient way possible. For the safety of construction crew members and park visitors, it is essential that all users respect the road closure.
Also starting this week: construction of the new Daniels Pass Trail and the new Sweetwater Canyon Trail, giving outdoor enthusiasts even more options in the park!
