Netflix’s “The Chair” revealed to Gold Derby that 12 cast members will be eligible for the ensemble award at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. The series, which debuted in August 2021, was created by the actress and screenwriter Amanda peet and four-time SAG Award winner Sandra Oh. “The Chair” follows a quirky group of English teachers as they navigate the personal turmoil, office politics, and unique political and social challenges of academia in the 21st century. In “The Chair,” Oh plays the role of Professor Ji-Yoon Kim, a college English teacher who is appointed the first female chair of his department. Unfortunately for Ji-Yoon, she is put in a difficult position by her dean (David Morse) when asked to push some of its older members into retirement due to declining enrollment. Complicating matters further is the unpredictable behavior of Ji-Yoon’s colleague and potential lover, Bill Dobson (Jay duplass), whose classroom antics put his career in jeopardy. Ji-Yoon must also return to chaos in the form of his stubborn adopted daughter Ju-Ju (Everly Carganille).

SAG Award Winner Bob balaban (“Gosford Park”) plays the tense and recalcitrant professor Elliot Rentz, who is cast with a young professor (Nana Mensah) whose more progressive teaching style that Rentz finds unpleasant. Emmy Champion Holland Taylor (“The Practice”) plays Professor Joan Hambling, a Chaucer’s expert whose loyalty to Ji-Yoon is tested when she is tired of being pushed aside.

Oh’s performance has already earned her a nomination for Best Comedy Actress at the 2022 Critics Choice Awards. A fifth SAG Award victory would put her in the company of actresses such as Maggie Smith, Helene Mirren, Edie Falco and Tina Fey. Oh previously prevailed as part of the sets of “Sideways” and Grey’s Anatomy, ”and won individual acting awards for“ Grey’s Anatomy ”and“ Killing Eve ”.
