Shazam: Fury of the Gods takes place two years after Sandberg’s Shazam 2019! film, lead actor Zachary Levi confirmed to DC FanDome China.

Shazam! The fury of the gods takes place two years after the original film. Realized by Curfew filmmaker David F. Sandberg, the first Shazam! The film was released in 2019, telling the story of struggling orphan Billy Batson (Asher Angel) as he gains the ability to transform into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi). Critically Shazam! was praised for its lightness and cheerful overtones, and commercially too, the film performed well at the box office, grossing $ 366 million worldwide against a budget of $ 80 million to $ 100 million. Given its success, WB and DC Films quickly put a sequel in development, which is currently slated to premiere on June 2, 2023.

Last Saturday, fans got their hands on many important details of Shazam! 2 when the BTS trailer for the film premiered at the DC FanDome. First, the footage highlighted the film’s new villains, Kalypso and Hespera, played by Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren. Some new locations have also been teased, along with the supernatural creatures that will appear in the movie. The trailer also gave a good look at the returning cast, including Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Grace Fulton, and Jovan Armand, among the teens. Plus, Levi, Adam Brody, Meagan Good, Ross Butler, and DJ Cotrona are superheroes in their own right. The sequel story has not been revealed, but new details show how much time has passed since the first movie ended.

During an appearance at DC FanDome China, Levi confirmed (via DCVERSO) this Shazam! The fury of Gods is fixed 2 years later Shazam! In the original film, Billy Batson was 15, but he will be 17 and one year from becoming an adult in the sequel. Levi also teased Billy’s whereabouts during the time jump. He said that when the new film premiered, the teenager would have become the head of the Shazam family after spending two years fighting thieves and criminals.

It makes sense for Shazam! 2 which will take place a few years after the original film, because otherwise it would be hard to explain how teenagers have grown up so much. From the moment the sequel was lit, Sandberg tried to rush work on the film, as he feared that if too much time passed, the young actors would grow too old to play their roles convincingly. This is the reason why, although Shazam! 2 will not be released for two years, production of the film has already ended.

With the time jump, logical questions arise about the superpowers of the Shazam family. Since Billy will only have one year of turning 18 in Shazam! 2, it will be interesting to see if he can still transform into his adult alter ego as an adult. In the sequel, Grace Fulton already plays both versions of Mary, Billy’s 19-year-old adopted sister, but that’s more because that’s how her powers were established in the Golden Age. However, it’s also likely that the DCEU will alter the powers of the Shazam Family so that she can choose her form once she’s legally adult, although to be sure fans should wait for more details on Shazam! 2. The two-year time jump allows for a smooth transition from the first film to the second and creates a plot to see how the characters have changed over the years.
