Sasha Calle, the new latina super-girl
The Young and the Restless actress Sasha Calle has just become the first Latina to star as Supergirl in the 2022 film, The Flash. The famous character was first introduced to the public in 2017 Justice League, and this new film will follow him more closely.
After being nominated for her outstanding performance in a drama series category for The Young and the Restless, Calle learned that she landed the role of Supergirl during a call with the film’s director, Andy Muschietti.
The video call was posted to her Instagram shortly after it was discovered that she had landed the role. It starts with the two jokes changing, Muschietti asking if she can physically fly. He then pulls out a costume saying, “You are Supergirl.”
Immediately, Calle bursts into tears of joy.
In an interview with Deadline, Muschietti said more than 400 people auditioned for the role before choosing Calle. “The United States, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia. The talent pool was really amazing and it was very difficult to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was meant to play this role, ”said Muschietti.
Helen Slater was the first to play Supergirl in the 1984 Warner Bros movie.
However, Melissa Benoist was the last woman to star as Zoe-el on The CW’s Supergirl, which will end with their sixth season this year.
After the movie was announced, audiences also found out that Ben Afflick would be playing Batman. Perhaps that could mean the Marvel Cinematic Universe is launching the next generation of films.
Somehow it seems like a new generation for representation on the big screen.
Being the first Latina to take on the role of Supergirl is not only inspiring, but it shows that the glass door continues to be shattered, and we are witnessing it from the front row.
The Flash is slated to hit theaters on June 3, 2022. Hopefully no masks in sight, just the ones onscreen.
