Paddy McGuinness missed his family’s birthday to secretly film Celebrity Bake Off as marriage fell apart
IF The Great British Bake Off had a technical challenge to shut up, Paddy McGuinness would be a shoo-in as Star Baker.
Because the Bolton comedian filmed the celebrity version of the Channel 4 show earlier this month – and managed to hide his marriage breakdown from the other contestants.
Despite having one of the loudest voices in showbiz, the Top Gear host kept his estrangement from wife Christine out of the Bake Off tent as they filmed in the grounds of Down Hall, Hatfield Heath, Essex, early July.
Paddy had to miss the ninth birthday of their twins, Leo and Penelope – who celebrated with a children’s party in the garden of their family home – to take part in the charity show.
A source revealed: “Paddy left to film on Friday night and was away all weekend.
He missed the twins’ birthday, but Christine made sure they had a day they’ll never forget.
“He kept their breakup a secret from the other celebrities during filming.
“He and Christine had previously separated and were living separate lives, but no one on set knew about it anymore.
“Paddy was still his usual happy self despite what was going on in his personal life.
“Which is truly incredible, given the pressure of the famous tent, which can confuse even the most balanced bakers.”
The couple – who had been married for 11 years – announced their separation last month.
But Paddy was seen still wearing his wedding ring as he celebrated his birthday recently at The Ivy in London.
Christine was seen wearing her ring on her right hand while out in Cheshire this week.
Hopefully Paddy had less drama in the Bake Off tent.
SET FOR HOLIDAYS IN SPACE
HOLLIDAY GRAINGER has landed a starring role in sci-fi movie Mickey7, the latest project from Oscar-winning director Parasite Bong Joon-Ho.
The Borgias actress began filming the film in London this week, opposite Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.
A source said: “This is arguably Holliday’s biggest role to date.
“It will see her blend in with the acting A-list and really elevate her stardom.
“She’s had big roles in movies before, but she was thrilled to be asked to work with Bong, who is one of the most sought-after people in the industry right now.”
The film is based on a novel by Edward Ashton, in which Mickey7 is an “expendable”, a disposable employee on a space expedition to colonize the ice world of Niflheim.
All I know is that Mickey7 looks like Minnie Mouse’s Gmail password.
The KARATE KID Cobra Kai reboot will return to Netflix on September 9th.
The long-awaited fifth series kicks off as decades after the finals of the All Valley Karate Tournament, rivals Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence are forced to team up to overthrow Johnny’s former master, John Kreese.
HEIDI: THE BEST OF THE SI PACK
FORGET high-waisted jeans – Simon Cowell will soon be known for his lederhosen if Heidi Klum gets her way.
The German supermodel has been given the green light to dress her fellow judge and boss for America’s Got Talent finals week.
And the music mogul, formerly known as Mr Nasty, reluctantly agreed.
Heidi said: “I kind of want to put him in lederhosen.
“They have long leder-hosen, but they also have short ones.
“I kind of want to put him in a short lederhosen.”
As the US Talent Show finals approach, I can’t wait to get a glimpse of Simon’s new look.
It will surely be worth the Golden Buzzer. . .
JAMES SCRUMS AT FORE
THE LGBT+ community continues to make its mark in the sports world.
And now the BBC has filmed a Pride special of its long-running quiz show Question Of Sport.
Rugby league referee James Child, who came out as gay last year, has revealed he joined swimmer Mark Foster, Scottish curler Bruce Mouat, England rugby player Katy Daley-McLean and hockey star Susannah Townsend.
Regular team captains Ugo Monye and Sam Quek presided over the action, with Paddy McGuinness returning as host.
James said the episode will air next month.
AS IF a wedding isn’t stressful enough, a BBC film crew is on hand as judges Sara Davies and Fred Sirieix give their verdict on the work of eight event planners in a new competition, Master Of Ceremonies .
Fred said, “Our planners are going to have to bring their A game.”
LOCK AND LOAD
EMILY BLUNT’s next big role looks totally extravagant.
The Devil Wears Prada actress has swapped Hollywood for the small screen to play Lady Cornelia Locke in a new high-octane western for BBC2 titled The English.
She stars alongside Marvel’s Echo’s Chaske Spencer, who plays former cavalry scout Eli Whipp.
These early images show the cast in action for the revenge tale, set in 1890 America.
The six-part series follows the story of a woman determined to wage war against the man she believes is responsible for her son’s death.
It will air in November and, to be frank, it looks great.
ARLENE: I CUT THE COSSIES
THE body-positive movement says that all you need to be “bikini body ready” is a bikini and a bodysuit.
But Arlene Phillips has her own opinion on who should and shouldn’t wear skinny cossies.
The former Strictly Come Dancing judge, who turns 80 next May, said: “I don’t wear a bikini because I don’t like my saggy ass – I don’t have a dancer’s butt anymore.
“But if you have a body like Helen Mirren’s and if it’s strong and firm, show it, for God’s sake.”
Showbiz types often rely on a bit of tweaking and tucking as they get older – but not Arlene, who shot to fame when she started the Hot Gossip dance troupe in the 1970s.
She added, “I didn’t have any work done. Everything is real.
