Nikki Reed says she and Evan Rachel Wood haven’t spoken for years after ‘Thirteen’

Thirteen was one of the most discussed films in the early 2000s. The film followed 13-year-old Tracey, whose family life is becoming increasingly troubled despite her close bond with her mother, Melanie (Helen Hunt). A quiet student, she gets close to Evie (Nikki Reed), the popular girl at school, and her life begins to spiral out of control.
Carried away into Evie’s world, Tracey soon finds herself consumed by drugs, sex and theft until Melanie realizes what is going on with her daughter. The controversial film received critical acclaim on its debut, winning a Sundance Director’s Award for filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke and Golden Globe nominations.
Despite the success of Thirteen, Reed and Wood haven’t spoken for years after the movie premiered.

Is âThirteenâ based on a true story?
Despite praise from Hardwicke’s direction and Reed, Wood and Hunt’s acting, the film was hugely controversial. Critics believed it was exploitation and since it depicted minors doing destructive things like self-harm and exploring their sexuality, they were unsure who the film was for. however, Thirteen was based on Reed’s actual experiences.
Hardwicke had a long-term relationship with Reed’s father, and she encouraged the actor to write about his experiences between the ages of 12 and 13. The duo wrote the screenplay for Thirteen for six days in January 2002.
Although some of the circumstances in Thirteen were fictitious, Reed said she was specifically inspired by the arrests of her friends for methamphetamine trafficking when she was 13.

The movie was so authentic because Reed and Wood were so close to their characters’ ages when Thirteen was being filmed. They were both 14 years old when filming. However, Wood turned 15 while filming. Although the actors formed a close bond, they fell apart once filming was over.

Despite their bond, Reed and Wood didn’t speak for years afterward. Thirteen made its debut. âWe were too young to realize it back then, but there were a lot of people pitting us against each other and creating a competitive atmosphere,â said Reed. History + Rain Podcast. “Which, now, looking back, I’m like, ‘Of course, because isn’t that the recipe for how [to] to treat all the young women in this industry? “
Fortunately, Reed contacted Wood in his early 20s and the couple have been very close ever since. âWe sat down together and spent two hours throwing up all of our feelings and emotions about the process,â Reed said. “We really connected the dots and passed it in this one session.”
Now women talk almost daily and FaceTime often.
