Newly paved parking lot at North Cheyenne Cañon reopens; road through the park always closed on weekdays
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo .– A newly paved parking lot in North Cheyenne Cañon Park is now open, but the main road through the park remains closed to vehicles on weekdays as crews complete additional improvement projects.
Tuesday afternoon, the teams completed work on the “hub” parking lot upstream from Helen Hunt Falls. at the intersection of North Cheyenne Canyon Road, High Drive and Gold Camp Road. The newly paved parking lot now has 92 designated spaces, as well as a concrete curb and gutter.
The land is accessible to vehicles from Gold Camp Road, who reopened after the crews removed a boulder that fell there in April.
North Cheyenne Cañon Road, the main road through the park, remains closed to vehicles Monday through Friday. The road is closed on weekdays from the Starsmore Visitor & Nature Center in Helen Hunt Falls. The trails remain open for non-motorized recreational use. The road is open on weekends.
The weekday closure of North Cheyenne Cañon Road is expected to last until June 18. The teams are working on several projects during the closure:
- Improvements to the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) at Helen Hunt Falls, including a new accessible space between the building and the waterfall, a new accessible ramp, and the addition of accessible parking spaces.
- Parking improvements at the Bruin Inn Picnic Area that will help formalize the setback parking, add booths and improve pedestrian flow across the street. There will be a connection to the Daniels Pass trail here.
- The new Daniels Pass trailhead will be completed and will provide 12 designated parking spaces. Bridge abutments will also be installed in anticipation of two new bridges on the Daniels Pass Trail, which are expected to be installed later this summer.
- The ADA-accessible parking lot and ramp in the South Cañon washroom building will be repaired.
