Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Gray survived a fatal car accident while secretly dating
Matthew Broderick is known for his enduring marriage to fellow celebrity Sarah Jessica Parker. The two have been together for several decades and have three children together. However, before Broderick and Parker hooked up, he was involved with several high-profile artists, including Jennifer Grey, who rose to fame through her work in dirty dance. Broderick and Gray connected on the set of one of Broderick’s most famous films and embarked on an epic secret romance that only went public when the two survived a devastating car crash.
When did Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Gray first meet?
When Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Gray first met on the set of their 1986 movie Ferris Bueller’s day off, he was already a big star. He had appeared in many popular movies, such as War games, and was considered one of the hottest young performers of his generation. Gray and Broderick played on-screen siblings in the film, but their relationship gradually became romantic off-screen.
Gray and Broderick started dating, but things didn’t always go well for the new couple. Gray would later reveal in her memoir that there were extreme ups and downs in their romance and that she grew suspicious of Broderick when random women called the actor. She also noted that she believed Broderick and another of his co-stars, Helen Hunt, got involved even as Broderick and Gray were dating.
Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Gray kept their romance a secret
Even though their romance was hot and cold, Jennifer Gray and Matthew Broderick got engaged while filming Ferris Bueller’s day off, as reported by BuzzFeed. However, they decided to keep their romance a secret, carefully avoiding the paparazzi and refusing to step out on red carpets together. Throughout the filming of their movie, Broderick and Gray kept their engagement to themselves — and for a moment, it looked like the two rising stars would go a long way.
However, in 1987, Broderick and Grey’s lives changed forever when a tragic car accident exposed their relationship to the public and affected their development as individuals.
Broderick and Grey’s romance went public after a devastating car crash
In 1987, Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Gray were vacationing in Ireland when tragedy struck. According to a People Magazine report, the couple were in Northern Ireland, driving a rental car, when it started to rain. After stopping to ask directions, Broderick and Gray got back into their rental vehicle and drove off, only to drift into the wrong lane and collide with another car, driven by 28-year-old Anna Gallagher. According to People, the driver and her mother, Margaret Doherty, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Broderick was rushed to hospital with a broken leg and cuts to his face, while Gray was released with just minor bruises. The tragedy resulted in Broderick spending four weeks in hospital, but avoiding jail.
Just a year after the devastating accident, Broderick and Gray separated, with Broderick meeting and marrying his now wife, Sarah Jessica Parker. In the years since, Gray has spoken about the accident, telling Entertainment Tonight in 2022 that the accident caused severe trauma. According to US Weekly, Gray admitted, “I was the only living witness because Matthew survived, but he was unconscious and had amnesia and was very seriously injured.” The actor described how the accident is one of the ‘top three traumas’ in his life, revealing: ‘I didn’t even know there were two other women who were tragically killed at the time. It’s just something you don’t come back the same way. The publication reports that family members of Gallagher and Doherty have since forgiven Broderick for the accident.
