How It Ends First Trailer Takes a Cameo-Filled Apocalyptic Journey Across LA
Produced, written and directed by Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones, How it ends was born from the confinement that we have experienced over the past year and more. The Sundance, SXSW and Tribeca Selection is an apocalyptic comedy in which freewheeling Liza (Lister-Jones) invites one last wild party before the end of the world. But getting there won’t be easy, once his car is stolen, and time is running out for his plan to sort things out with friends and family. Accompanied by her youngest (Cailee Spaeny), Liza sets out on a journey through Los Angeles, encountering an eclectic cast of characters.
Ahead of a release in a few weeks, MGM has now unveiled the trailer for the film as well (briefly) starring Olivia Wilde, Fred Armisen, Whitney Cummings, Charlie Day, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Helen Hunt, Nick Kroll, Lamorne Morris, Bradley Whitford, Colin Hanks, Tawny Newsome, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Marshall Green, Bobby Lee, Glenn Howerton, Ayo Edebiri, Sharon Van Etten, Paul W. Downs, Raymond Cham Jr., Angelique Cabral, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer and Pauly Shore.
Jake Kring-Schreifels said in his Sundance review: “You need urgency and momentum to make a film like this. The incoming armageddon, sometimes seen as a CGI flick in the blue sky, doesn’t have it. But at the end of the day, Lister-Jones and Spaeny have enough chemistry to provide the real drama. The two have worked together over the past year The profession: the heritage, and their encouraging and antagonistic conversations fuel the heart of the film. Liza’s frenzy of apologies is truly a personal calculation, or like Colin Hanks adding to the list of cameos, declares, “an existential scavenger hunt.” Liza needs to recognize and accept her young self as a crucial part of her life. It’s just enough to invest in this therapy session, and Spaeny gives the material a seriousness that never reads wrong.
