British actress Helen Mirren, 76, has come under fire on social media as internet trolls attack her for playing former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in a new film.

“As sick (sic) of doing a biopic on criminal Golda Meir and yes no surprise racist Helen Mirren is happy to portray the sheer distorted version of a disgusting individual,” a tweet from a profile who describes herself as ” Palestinian and proud “read.

Another user wrote that “Helen Mirren making a movie about Israel’s first female prime minister is a slap in the face of all the people of Palestine, they are literally celebrating the takeover of Palestine and bringing families out of their homes. houses, murder children, families! Tasteless movie!

“Ugly Zionists and Helen Mirren should lose their lady status for this. Double standards, they say they stand for equality but don’t care about Palestinian human rights, ”another profile tweeted.

The British actress, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of another prominent female figure, Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, and was awarded the title Lady in 2003, stars in a biopic about the only female Prime minister of Israel, who served from 1969 to 1974. The first photos of her in Golda Meir were released last Wednesday.

Mirren is said to have immersed herself in studies of Hebrew language, Jewish history and writing about the Holocaust while in Israel in 2009 in preparation for her role as a retired Israeli agent of the Mossad in the film ” Debt ”. She was one of more than 200 actors to sign an open letter opposing efforts to boycott an LGBTQ film festival in Tel Aviv in late October.

Golda Meir was the fourth Prime Minister of Israel and was a leader during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. She was colloquially known as the “Iron Lady” of Israeli politics and the first Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion has her. once called “the best man in government,” according to a BBC profile on Meir. She died in 1978 of lymphoma.

Anti-Zionist attacks on social media are nothing new. Last July, popular singer Billie Eilish was “inundated with thousands of robot-generated comments made up of Palestinian flags and other Palestinian solidarity-themed comments” on Instagram after posting a video in which she said ” Hello Israel, ”according to the CCFP (Creative Community for Peace). CCFP research found that hundreds of bots commented on Eilish’s photos and received thousands of likes for each comment, though commentator accounts never even posted a single photo on their own profile.

A few months earlier, during the May escalation between Israel and Hamas, hundreds of thousands of Malaysian online activists spammed Israeli accounts on popular social media platforms. The groups called on their supporters to harass, block, hack and shut down Israeli accounts using loopholes in social media platforms that allowed them to create bogus reporting and password recovery processes.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a hot political issue, especially on social media. A study by the Community Security Trust (CST) showed that anti-Semitism increased dramatically – around 365% – in the UK amid the May conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Dan Levinson, Jeremy Sharon and the staff of The Jerusalem Post contributed to this story.
