Dame Helen Mirren ‘wants no criticism’ from her husband.
The 76-year-old actress has been married to director Taylor Hackford since 1997 and insists the couple give each other “unconditional praise”.
She said: “I believe in unconditional praise from those close to her. I don’t want any criticism from [Taylor]. And I also give him unconditional praise – more or less. We allow ourselves to do what we want and we continue. »
The Oscar-winning star – who met the man behind films such as ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ during an audition for ‘White Nights’ and ended up dating him for a decade before saying ‘yes’ – has also revealed that the COVID-19 lockdown marked the first time in their careers that the couple could spend a lot of time together.
She told PEOPLE, “I’ve worked every year since I was 20,” she says. “COVID was the first time in my entire life that I haven’t worked for six months. I know people have been through this terrible, terrible time, but what was precious to me is that I have been able to spend time with my husband and sit across from him every night for six months – something I’ve never done before – and not worry or even think about work.”
However, the ‘Calendar Girls’ actress – who will celebrate her silver wedding anniversary with Taylor in December 2022 – also claimed that a key part of a successful relationship is having a sense of individual identity.
She said: “A very important part of love is maintaining your own sense of identity. In a way, that’s the most important thing of all, not to overwhelm yourself with someone else. ‘other, far from it. Be honest and authentic who you are.’
