Dame Helen Mirren talks about being an L’Oréal Paris ambassador at 76
Looks like we have the same headband! I am so in them! Helen Mirren exclaims as soon as we log in for our Zoom call and she sees me appear on her screen. She is possibly a Lady, one of the greatest actors in the world, and the only person to have achieved the famous Acting Triple Crown in the US (Academy, Emmy and Tony Awards) and UK (BAFTA Film, BAFTA Television and Laurence Olivier awards), but I can say right away that Mirren is deeply approachable and down to earth. She was quick to recommend that I check out Headbands for Hope, a company that donates a headband to a sick child for every item sold. This want to make a difference is evident throughout our conversation, as well as her enthusiasm at having been an ambassador for L’Oréal Paris for the past seven years.
“When I was 20, there was no way a woman my age [now] would be the spokesperson for a beauty products company, ”she said. “When I got on board I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m good enough, if I’m good enough, I’m definitely way too old.’ [But] in fact, the L’Oréal family was so welcoming and so depressurized in that sense; [they] wanted me because of who I am, and that’s it.
Mirren believes that this openness to a broader perspective on beauty reflects the profound transformations taking place in our society. “Life doesn’t come in essential switches,” she says. “Most of the time, it’s gradual. It happens in such small incremental changes that you are not aware of it at the time. You suddenly look back and say, “Oh, my God! I am a completely different person than I was 30 years ago. In addition, society and culture are gradually changing. We still have a way to go and more will come, but it has been a great journey for me. That’s why I want to live long: I want to see what’s coming, I don’t want to miss it!
She also emphasizes the importance of gender representation for the next generation of young women looking for role models. “Every time I watch the news and [an expert] arrives and it’s a woman or those [COVID] doctors and scientists are women – that would never have been the case 30 years ago, ”she says. “More is the case [now], girls over 10 think, “Oh, I can be that! “”
While Mirren is an undeniably beautiful person inside and out, she’s not the biggest fan of the word “beauty”. “I love to dress up, put on makeup and wear high heels, but I think the beauty industry should be called “the swagger industry”, ‘”she said.” I’m looking for a new word that has nothing to do with beauty. Because we’re not all beautiful, but we can all boast! Mirren feels more beautiful when she’s looking house. “I live in a place surrounded by a lot of nature,” she says. “There is something very calming about just being who you are and in nature – without makeup, in fact – as a part of the beautiful planet we inherited. I just hope we don’t destroy it.
