Coronation Street Spider star Martin Hancock pays sweet tribute to Emily Bishop actress | Television & Radio | Showbiz and television
As Emily’s nephew (played by Eileen Derbyshire), Spider was a popular character on Coronation Street from 1997 until he left the cobbles in 2003. Talking about reprising his role as an eco-warrior on This Morning on Friday, Martin paid a touching tribute to his former co-star, reflecting on the fun they had on set and calling the 90-year-old “easy to work with.”
“We were watching that clip over there, you two had such good chemistry,” ITV host Dermot O’Leary said after an old clip of Emily and Spider aired.
“Oh, that was lovely,” agreed co-host Alison Hammond.
Dermot continued, “You were such a weird couple, but it was awesome.”
“They were a strange couple,” smiles Martin. “But Eileen was so easy to work with, and she was so fun.”

Reminiscing, he recalled: “Our problem was that we had a lot of scenes that happened on a Friday afternoon, the tea and cake scenes around hers.
“And we would do the script but we kept slipping into our own names – we had to reshoot!”
Emily made her first appearance in soap in 1961, and her character remained a fixture in soap for decades.
She left in 2016 and had a brief appearance in 2019, but fans still see her as one of the most legendary characters.
Ken promised he would come visit Emily soon. As they ended the call, Emily said, “We’ll talk later, goodbye.”
Emily was at the center of some of the soap opera’s biggest storylines, from the murder of her husband Ernest Bishop (Stephen Hancock) to a nervous breakdown in 1992.
Longtime fans of the show will remember how close Spider was to Emily, and her return has gone down well with longtime viewers of the soap opera.
When it was announced that Spider would be returning in April, Martin said: “Having the opportunity to get back on the cobbles is fabulous, I’m so excited to see lots of old friends and to understand what Spider has been up to.
“I always wanted to come back at some point and I just felt it was the right time. I am forever grateful to Iain [MacLeod] for the occasion.”
On his decision to bring Spider back to Weatherfield, producer Iain Macleod explained, “Martin is a fabulous actor and Spider is a character with real heritage and fan affection.
“His return heralds an exciting new story for Toyah, one that will be tangled in a mess of guilt and secrecy when Spider arrives.”
Coronation Street continues Friday at 8 p.m. on ITV.
