‘Black Canary’ Solo Movie Heads To HBO Max
Another member of the Birds of Prey will fly solo.
Black Canary, the mainstay of DC Comics who has appeared in comics, television, and then the recent Birds of prey movie, will get its own solo film on the HBO Max streaming service. The film will feature the version of the character played by Jurnee Smollett in the Birds of prey movie. The script will be written by Misha Green, who worked with Smollett on the recent HBO Lovecraft Country series.
This is the word of Cinelinx, who reports that according to one source, Smollett and Green are working on “a Black Canary ‘project’ – which could potentially be a series” but “another source was adamant that the project had become a film that would (likely) follow the events in Birds of prey. HBO Max is already working on other films for the heroes of DC Comics, including a Batgirl movie and a project about a Black Superman that is said to have sparked the interest of actor / producer Michael B. Jordan.
Series or film, the project is “in the early stages of development” and “is still far from it, as Green has several other projects underway that she needs to deal with first”, according to Collider. Although there was no news on a possible Birds of prey sequel, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is currently appearing in The suicide squad by writer / director James Gunn.
Cinelinx says the project’s official announcement will be made later this fall at DC’s FanDome event, the company’s second annual virtual release of its own Comic-Con, complete with billboards and trailer premieres.
