BBC Graham Norton show: Harry Potter star Jim Broadbent’s gorgeous 35-year marriage with watching mum ‘slip away’ and his first role in Only Fools and Horses
An icon of British film and television like no other, Jim Broadbent has graced our screens since the 1980s. hundreds of acting credits to his name.
His career shows no signs of stopping, however, as he recently starred alongside another household name, Helen Mirren, in a crime comedy drama. The Duke which premiered earlier this week. Tonight (February 11) they will both appear on The Graham Norton Show on BBC One to discuss their careers alongside popstar Adele and other famous faces – but what about the life of the actor away from the camera?
Dating back to the 1980s, he shot to fame after playing ‘lonely’ Roy Slater on the hit BBC sitcom. Only fools and horses. Although his character only appeared in three episodes, his character’s past was well documented after it was revealed that he was always jealous of Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter and his gang at school.
From there, his career only went from strength to strength. From Only Fools and Horses to Harry Potter, his versatility as an actor has been well documented. He portrayed the iconic potions master, Professor Horace Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Princeand played a huge role in JK Rowling’s eight-part film franchise.

Away from the screen, he led a relatively normal life – but it wasn’t without heartache. He lost his mother Doreen to Alzheimer’s disease in 1995, and he has spoken candidly about his struggles during this time in various interviews.
Addressing the Radio schedules In 2011, of her mother’s experience with the disease, the star said: “It just happened overnight, like a slip-up, and she couldn’t bond in the normal way anymore. The biggest thing more distressing is that the person dies, in effect, before they are physically gone, so you suffer a kind of bereavement as their life goes on.
The Academy winner has been married to painter and former theater designer Anastasia Lewis for 35 years. The couple married in 1987. Broadbent has no children, but Lewis has two sons from a previous relationship. His main residence is in the Lincolnshire Wolds, but he also had a residence in London.
