A funny thing happens on Ashley’s way to wedding in this exclusive Blindspotting clip
One of the best TV adaptations of the movie in years, Starz’s Blind spot is about to complete its first season. Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, who wrote, produced and starred in the film of the same name, agreed to do the series with Lionsgate as long as they could tell a new chapter of the story, seen from Ashley’s perspective. (Jasmine Cephas Jones), the longtime girlfriend of Miles (Casal) and who has recently suffered. At the series premiere, Miles was arrested for drug possession (New Years Eve, no less), leaving Ashley to once again pick up the pieces. But it’s also an opportunity for Ashley to rediscover who she is outside of her relationship, and what kind of mother she wants to be to Sean (Atticus Woodward). It’s yet another escape role for Hamilton alum Cephas Jones, who officially claims prominent female status as a harassed but enterprising Oakland resident.
The first season followed Ashley as she moved in with stepmom Rainey (Helen Hunt) and sister-in-law Trish (Jaylen Barron), while also trying to protect Sean from the realities of Miles’ incarceration. . She also reconnected with Janelle (Candace Nicholas-Lippman), sister of Collin (Diggs), who grew up next to Miles and Trish. Blind spot brought as much pathos as style to Ashley’s journey, giving it monologues and asides, even ending a first episode with a sweet pas de deux that symbolized Miles and Collins’ longtime friendship. In the spirit of the movie, the series also features some of the saucy comedies on TV, much of which centers around Trish, the liveliest of the live feeds. Naturally, when the time comes for Ashley and Miles to get married (through a glass divider), their nuptials don’t go off without a hitch. In this exclusive clip from the season one finale, “Bride Or Die,” Ashley, Trish, Sean and Janelle roam the prison visiting rooms, trying to find Miles. They end up meeting a Niles (Utkarsh Ambudkar), who is just as ready to get married.
Nothing in Ashley and Miles’ relationship has been easy, as the season (and film) has amply demonstrated. But when Ashley discovered the engagement ring Miles had hidden in her childhood bedroom, she seemed eager to re-engage. Now that she is in her white dress and surrounded by witnesses, will the wedding actually take place, or will more rain fall in their lives in the Bay Area?
“Bride Or Die” will air Sunday, August 8 at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
