We’ve highlighted some great ’80s romance movies to binge on Prime Video this weekend.
Dirty Dance (1987)
In 1963, Frances “Baby” Houseman and her family visited Kellerman’s in Dirty dance. This film has an exceptional cast consisting of Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Gray, Jerry Orbach and Cynthia Rhodes.
The story follows Baby (Grey) and her family as they vacation at the upscale Catskills resort, Kellerman’s. She meets a dance teacher, Johnny Castle (Swayze), a man her father would never approve of. They become dance partners, and even after her father forbids it, she is determined to perform the last dance of the season with Johnny.
It’s a heartwarming coming-of-age movie with a fantastic soundtrack.
The Woman in Red (1984)
The woman in red was written by Gene Wilder, who also starred in the film with Charles Grodin, Gilda Radner, Joseph Bologna, Judith Ivey and Kelly LeBrock. Wilder wrote the screenplay for the Yves Robert film adaptation Sorry My Case.
Teddy (Wilder) is a married man, but when he sees a gorgeous woman in a red dress (LeBrock), he can’t stop thinking about her. With encouragement from his friends, he contacts the woman in red with a plan to have an affair with her. But, he soon realizes that although she is a beautiful woman, having an affair is not as easy as thought and may not be worth it.
The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “I Just Called to Say I Love You”, written and performed by Stevie Wonder.
Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)
The romantic drama film, Some Kind of Wonderful, directed by Howard Deutch (Pretty in Pink), stars Eric Stoltz, Mary Stuart Masterson and Lea Thompson.
Set in the 80s, this film shows the strict class distinctions in a Los Angeles high school. Keith (Stoltz) is a blue-collar mechanic with a tomboyish best friend, Watts (Masterson). He’s in love with the most popular girl in school, Amanda (Thompson), but she’s dating a guy from a wealthy family who treats her terribly. It’s a movie that will strike a chord with you as Keith tries to find his way into Amanda’s heart only to realize that she’s not the girl for him.
John Hughes wrote this movie, so you know it’s a great 80s movie.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (1985)
Girls just wanna have fun was an 80s mantra used in this quintessential 80s movie title. Featuring familiar faces including Sarah Jessica Parker, Lee Montgomery, Morgan Woodward, Jonathan Silverman, Shannen Doherty and Helen Hunt.
Army kid Janey (Parker) moves to a new town and attends a Catholic school for girls. She meets Lynne (Hunt) and their love of dancing leads them to quickly become friends. They participate in a dance competition to become a regular at dancing on dance tvmuch to the disapproval of Janey’s father.
It’s packed with ’80s fashion and music, and although it initially received less than favorable reviews, it’s become a cult classic.
Heathers (1989)
It’s huge to include this in the romance category, but it’s an 80s movie, so I’m including it. Heathers is a dark comedy starring Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker and Penelope Milford. think darker mean girls with one more murder.
JD (Slater) is a new student at Westerburg High School, where the “Heathers”, the clique of girls who run the school, make people’s lives miserable. JD falls in love with Veronica (Ryder) in his twisted way, so there’s your romance. He then begins a wave of revenge on all the popular people in the school as Veronica tries to stop him.
It’s another movie that didn’t get the best reviews, but has since become a cult classic and is known as one of the greatest coming of age movies of all time.
