An unknown and invisible phenomenon drives people to commit suicide and all humanity knows is that if you see it, you will die. A woman and her two children therefore try to make their way to a place where they will be safe; but it’s a perilous journey to get there and they have to do it blindfolded.

bird box It’s not the best horror movie ever, but it has some seriously scary moments, and Bullock’s performance is top-notch.

Conspiracy

Set in the early 70s, Conspiracy follows the Perron family as they move into an old farmhouse in Rhode Island. Soon the family realizes there is a dark presence in the house, so they enlist the help of paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren.

This movie was actually based on a true story and is extremely grounded (a rarity for paranormal horror movies); these two facts alone make Conspiracy one of the best horror films of the last twenty years.

The Exorcist

Considered one of the scariest movies of all time and loosely based on a true story, the classic film The Exorcist follows a worried mother seeking help when her 12-year-old daughter starts behaving strangely. Two priests try to exorcise the young girl when they suspect her of being possessed by the devil.

Considering it was made in the 70s, exorcism has great special effects and is still scary enough for those not well versed in horror movies.

A couple travels to a secluded lake house to spice up their marriage…and their sex life. The husband happily handcuffs his wife to the bed during foreplay, but when he dies unexpectedly, the wife must fight for her freedom and survival.

Sure, it’s a bit of an odd premise, but it’s based on a novel by iconic horror writer Stephen King. In addition, Gugino’s impressive performance makes Gerald’s game a must have for horror fans.

After fleeing war-torn South Sudan, a refugee couple are allowed to live in suburban London. However, the couple struggles to adjust to their new life, especially since they can both sense something wrong in their home.

Complete with an underlying social commentary and a devastating twist, His home is a rather refreshing horror movie that doesn’t follow all of the genre’s cliched tropes.

silence follows a deaf woman who lives alone in a remote wooded area. She must fight for her life when a mysterious masked man shows up and tries to break into her house and kill her. full of tension, silence is a fantastic modern slasher film.

If you are a fan of Stephen King, highly praised and recommended silence on Twitter, so it must be good.

I see you

A small-town detective investigates the mysterious disappearance of a young boy, but a series of strange events begin to unfold for the detective and his family. I see you is definitely more of a thriller than a horror movie, but it will keep you on the edge of your seat.

If you like horror movies that are more psychological than gory, I see you is for you.

The invisible Man

When a violent scientist commits suicide, his wife Cecilia suddenly becomes tormented by an unseen entity that stalks and attacks her. However, because no one can see it, no one believes her, leaving Cecilia to take matters into her own hands.

Moss’ performance is incredible and this remake is a hugely modern and horrifying take on the 1933 original. The invisible Man movie.

Orphan

A truly chilling film. Orphan follows a married couple who adopt a nine-year-old girl after losing their unborn baby. However, when a series of dark and dangerous events unfold, the couple begins to suspect that the seemingly angelic child they adopted might be evil.

Orphan is gripping, extremely well-directed, and child actor Fuhrman gives an outstanding acting performance; it’s a must-have for horror fans.

The platform

Set in the distant future, The platform follows the inmates of the vertical prison where inmates on upper levels are fed while starving inmates watch from below. The film is dark and violent and has wonderful social commentary underlying its plot.

If you’re looking for a well-written horror movie that will really make you think, The platform is a must watch.

The ritual

Four old college friends decide to get together for a hike but, unbeknownst to them, an ancient evil lurks in the forest. An intriguing story with an eerie and chilling soundtrack, The ritual will make you tense.

If you liked The Blair Witch Project you will greatly appreciate The ritual.

Speedwell

During a rare solar eclipse in 1991, a young teenager, Verónica, and her two classmates lead a seance using a Ouija board. The session goes terribly wrong and Verónica is tormented by an evil supernatural force.

Speedwell is moderately creepy, especially when you learn that the movie is based on a true story and has a wonderful “haunted house” feel to it.

1922

According to a short story by Stephen King, 1922 follows a farmer who decides to kill his wife for financial gain. The farmer convinces his teenage son to help with the murder, but soon after he successfully kills her, the two are plagued by strange supernatural occurrences.

1922 is more unsettling than scary but will still be immensely enjoyed by horror fans.
